Keep an eye out for native Hemlock Scale Hemiberlesia (formerly Abgrallaspis) ithacae. I noticed some interesting scale insects on Fraser fir on a  farm last week and have had them confirmed as this native insect. I have yet to see this scale insect on other farms, and it was located on only a few trees. I don't suspect this is a pest that spreads easily on Fraser fir as it's only been found a handful of times since 2008 in Ashe, Henderson, and Haywood Counties. Here are a few photos:
